SEE LAWRENCE IN A NEW LIGHT
ILUMINACION LAWRENCE is a city-wide lighting project that aims to create a warm and inviting public realm experience at night using LED lighting and projections. Lighting the city’s walls and pedestrian spaces not only makes for a safer, more enjoyable city, but it also serves as a dynamic medium where creatives are invited to turn city streets into immersive installations of art.

SOFT LAUNCH
JUNE 2019
Pemberton State Park
On June 5th, 2019 Lawrence, MA got a preview of Iluminacion Lawrence. The event featured a community input activity so guests could suggest future lighting projects, an art exhibit relating to the Gas Emergency by the Groundwork Lawrence Green Team, ice cream from the Lawrence Police Department and local grub from El Punto Del Chimi food truck. DJ Angel Alba got the party started and the Drumline from Lawrence High School contributed to building up the energy and counting us down to turning on the lights of the Ayer Mill Clock Tower and Casey (central) Bridge! These are the first 2 of the 4 projects planned for Iluminacion Lawrence.

HISTORYInspired by the City of Boston’s bridge lightings, Lawrence leaders invited Allston-based lighting artist, John Powell, to visit the city for a potential lighting project. The City, in partnership with the Lawrence Redevelopment Authority, agreed to light the Casey (middle) Bridge in the summer of 2017. Inspired by the project, leaders at the Essex County Community Foundation (ECCF) followed suit and developed lighting plans for the Ayer Clock Tower. Fast forward to 2019, ILUMINACION LAWRENCE was born. Plans to expand from its two initial lighting projects to many throughout the City of Lawrence are currently underway.
