Bruins bring message of fitness, healthy living to Lawrence Boys and Girls Club

Basketball almost always dominates the gymnasium at the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club.

Many a club member will tell you that he dreams of playing in the NBA.

Recently, however, hockey prevailed as Boston Bruins alumni brought a strong message of healthy living and fitness to the club. An estimated 300 boys and girls gathered in the gym and participated in activities such as shot-on-goal drills and floor hockey.

Just about every one of them was clad in a Boston Bruin s jersey. They also did push-ups, curl-ups – which are similar to sit-ups – horizontal and vertical jumping and other activities.

For an hour and a half, they did all this moving under the watchful eyes of Boston Bruins Foundation staffers. The executive director of the foundation, Bob Sweeney, a former center and right wing for the Bruins in the late 1980s and early 1990s, noted residents of Lawrence, Andover and North Andover have gone through hard times in the wake of the Sept. 13 gas disaster.
