There’s a plan on the table to take a portion of Costello Urban Farm and turn it into pickleball courts and other developments. And while we love outdoor recreation, this comes at a cost our community cannot afford.

 

Costello isn’t just a plot of land. It’s where hundreds of hands come together to grow food, build community, and heal. Managed by Groundwork Lawrence and powered by volunteers, Costello Urban Farm has been feeding our city—literally and spiritually—since 2012.

In the height of the pandemic, when food insecurity soared, this farm delivered over 9,000 pounds of fresh produce to our neighbors. It continues to support local organizations that rely on these harvests to feed families across Lawrence. Every season, community members also grow their own food in the connected Costello Community Garden, reclaiming their right to healthy, culturally relevant produce.

 

This isn’t just about vegetables. It’s about sovereignty, reciprocity, and justice. It's about a living, breathing space that brings people together around food and land. Taking away even a portion of it sends the wrong message—and takes away real nourishment from real people.

 

At Costello, we sow seeds of justice. We grow futures. We grow together.

Hay un plan sobre la mesa para tomar una parte de la Granja Urbana Costello y convertirla en canchas de pickleball y otros desarrollos. Y aunque apoyamos la recreación al aire libre, este cambio tiene un costo que nuestra comunidad no puede asumir.

Costello no es solo un terreno. Es un espacio donde cientos de manos se unen para cultivar alimentos, construir comunidad y sanar. Administrada por Groundwork Lawrence y sostenida por voluntarios, la Granja Urbana Costello ha estado alimentando nuestra ciudad—literal y espiritualmente—desde 2012.

En el punto más alto de la pandemia, cuando la inseguridad alimentaria se disparó, esta granja entregó más de 9,000 libras de productos frescos a nuestros vecinos. Hoy sigue apoyando a organizaciones locales que dependen de estas cosechas para alimentar a familias en toda Lawrence. Cada temporada, miembros de la comunidad también cultivan sus propios alimentos en el Huerto Comunitario Costello, recuperando su derecho a alimentos saludables y culturalmente relevantes.

Esto no se trata solo de vegetales. Se trata de soberanía, reciprocidad y justicia. Se trata de un espacio vivo que une a las personas en torno a la comida y la tierra. Quitar aunque sea una parte de él envía un mensaje equivocado—y le quita alimento real a personas reales.
